We’re Evaluating 20 Potential COVID-19 Herbal Remedies –NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food Drug, Administration and Control, NAFDAC, says it has started conducting a laboratory analysis on 20 herbal formulations to assess their efficacy in the treatment of the novel coronavirus.

In her address at an investigative hearing on research into the pandemic organised by the House of Representatives Committee on COVID-19, NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the result would be made available after a proper evaluation of the herbal remedies.

“Since COVID-19, we have received about 20 herbal medicinal products applications and we have given it expedited review approach of about six weeks to evaluate the safety, after which the clinical trial for efficacy will be done and we have to review the protocols. These products are still under evaluation.”

Aside receiving research material to combat the virus, she revealed that the agency has witnessed a massive increase in the number of local hand sanitiser manufacturers.

“Before COVID, we had only 26 companies that registered with us to make hand sanitisers. Now, we have about 103 companies that we gave an expedited review to and are now making hand sanitisers. That is why most shelves in pharmacies and supermarkets are no longer empty.

“Our laboratory has been working round the clock. When we started, we had to do a lot of testing for chloroquine and others. And when the Madagascar COVID Organic came, we went into action and, I can say, we were the first to submit the full report of COVID Organic,” she noted.

It would be recalled that NAFDAC had told Punch HealthWise on June 24 that its laboratory officials are still evaluating the safety of Madagascar herbal remedy for COVID-19.

In a phone chat with our correspondent, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, NAFDAC’s Director of Public Relations insisted the agency is working on the herbal remedy and would not rush the evaluation.

“We are working on it. It is still in progress. This is not something that could be rushed and the result announced to the public.

“Once the result is ready, we will forward it to the same Ministry of Health that commissioned it,” he reassured.
