Mallam Balarabe Ilelah, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, Registrar/Chief Executive of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), recently paid a courtesy visit to Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja.
The DG of NBC and the Registrar of APCON have asked the EFCC for help in cleansing the media/advertising industry and removing iniquitous actions of select operators that have hampered the industry’s development and progress.
The NBC DG indicated that some stakeholders’ fraudulent activities, as well as a large advertising debt, have raised worries, as these have posed operating issues for the business. Most media companies are operationally handicapped as a result of getting finance under false pretenses and other fraudulent practices by some stakeholders, which are jeopardizing the industry’s growth.
The EFCC’s intervention, according to the APCON Registrar, is critical to the ongoing industry reforms’ success. He went on to say that such action will eliminate financial corruption and unethical business practices.
The Registrar wants the EFCC’s help in providing financial security for the advertising business against all types of financial crimes, which stifle the industry’s growth.

The EFCC Chairman reaffirmed the agency’s zero tolerance policy for corruption and financial crimes in the country. He pledged the EFCC’s commitment to the advertising business, stating that the Commission will establish two Desk Offices for industry engagement in Abuja and Lagos.
He ordered the two agencies (NBC and APCON) to submit a thorough proposal for the EFCC’s intervention, including the framework and scope of the intervention. The Chairman of the EFCC thanked the DG of NBC and the Registrar of APCON for the audience and the promise of the Commission’s support for industry reform.
